East Cavan Eagles will be entering their second week of this GAA-Basketball Ireland programme. Eagles have teamed up with local GAA Club Castlerahan to carry out this initiative.
The aim of this programme is firmly based on participation in sport.
The programme has a major focus on the crossover skills of both sports. The tactical aspects of the game can be much the same with a key emphasis on spacing, developing spacial awareness, peripheral vision, timing cuts and decision making.
The response from the first week with Castlerahan was excellent and we look forward to carrying on the programme.
Castlerahans’ coach John Clarke, Eagles coach Carol Verschoyle are the two coaches spearheading this programme, well done to both in taking the initiative on starting this.
We are sure that both clubs will benefit from this programme.
This weekend see our Under 18 Boys & Girls head off to participate in Basketball Ireland’s Under 18 Cup Competitions. Our boys head up to Letterkenny whilst the girls head to Kildare.
Letterkenny Blaze will host the boys in LYIT and the girls will be hosted by Liffey Celtic in Leixlip.
We wish them all the best of luck in their endeavours.
We would also wish fellow North East club Dunshaughlin Rockets the very best of luck as they travel to Cork to fulfil their fixtures in this prestigious competition.
Full details of the cup events are available below.

It’s been awhile since there has been Senior basketball in the North East Region and the wait was more than worth it.
East Cavan Eagles hosted Savi in Virginia College on Sunday Nov. 1st and what a game the assembled masses enjoyed. It was great to see all the Eagles players return to the flock after a 3/4 year absence for some of them due to the lack of basketball provided ofr them due to creeping over the Under 18 age. There was a great turnout of support for both teams and we hope this enthusiasm continues for the senior game.
We were all treated to a fast paced game that flowed due to the excellent refereeing of both Brendan Markey and Dotie Dulska who I think enjoyed the experience as much as the rest of us.
Savi came out victors in the end by a single point (final score Eagles 65-66Savi) having been behind for the 1 st quarter, but fighting back to open as much as a 10 point lead with the introduction of ex-Eagle Rokus Rimkus.
Eagles fought back with great intensity to pull back, but all to no avail, narrowly losing out by just the one point.
It was many of the spectators first time to see basketball at this level and they all seemed to enjoy the spectacle.
Well done both Savi and Eagles.
