The Academy is Back

The Academy is Back

Since we first started The Academy it has always been popular with children in the targeted 7-10 years age group. We have always felt that this is the ideal age for children to take their first steps into team sports, not only basketball.

As a club, last season was probably the first time we had children from our Academy step on the court to play league games at Under 12 level and I think we all saw the benefit of our Academy for both the boys and girls.

Later than we would have liked, but the Academy started back last night and wow!, what a turn out. 74 children joined in the fun and games last night in Virginia College, not a parking space was to be had at the school.

We would like to thank all that helped out with the coaching and supervision on the night and look forward to seeing you all again next week. It was great to see some of our club players (and even an ex-club player) helping out on the night.

The Academy is a very important part of the development of our club and has already brought though some very strong players and Under 12 & Under 14 Levels, we look forward to watching with interest the next crop of stars coming though.

This year we are changing the format of our camp to better target the needs of our club members.
From 10 am to 12:30 pm each day will see us hold a Junior Camp . This will give our coaching staff more time to introduce the fundamentals of the game to players in the 6 to 11 year age bracket. Previously all campers partook in the full day and it may have proved too much to take in for our younger campers. We feel this format will benefit them better.
The Senior Camp will start each day at 2pm and continue until 4:30pm. This part of the camp will concentrate more on the technical parts of the game, types of defence/offence, setting screens, rebounding etc. it will be more focussed towards player improvement. Participants in this camp will have played league basketball previously and should be ready for some hard work!
We look forward to seeing you all back after your summer break.
