Muckno Lakers       57

East Cavan Eagles 53
Last season, Muckno Lakers were averaging 58 points a game over Eagles but just before Christmas  the girls cut that deficit by a whopping 54 points. These are the top two Senior women’s teams in our region and it was their first meeting of the season. The previous weekend Muckno were dispatching Cork side Brunell as they defended their Intermediate Cup title and progress to the semi finals in January. But for a few hardy souls, the north east support must have presumed this would be a one sided event and stayed away, but how wrong they were.
Both sides saw changes to their rosters from last season with Eagles listed 5 under 18 players and two 1st year college goers and while Muckno were down a couple of key players they still had 12 lined out. Even though inexperience can be a challenge at this level, we mustn’t forget that all but one of these girls lined out at an U18 Cup semi final against Glanmire two years ago, no challenge is too big.
Starts and finishes are key to these games and Muckno started well but Eagles kept in touch throughout the opening quarter with Chloe Mc Elhinney hitting 8 of their 14 points and with Ciara & Caitlin Brady & Ailisia Mc Enroe stepping up, Eagles now have spome strength and depth. Eagles found themselves behind by 7 at the end of the period but they regrouped in the second quarter and out scored Muckno with points from Ciara Brady, Aislinn Grealy and a second three of the game for Caitlin Brady to only trail 35 – 31 at half time buzzer.
Eagles knew how dangerous Muckno could be in the third quarter but the girls once again stepped up to the mark and stopped Muckno’s threat to finish the period 43 – 39. During the period luck seemed to be running out as Muckno pushed out to a 9 point lead but the girls once again adapted to reel the Lakers in. Excellent defensive work by Leah Flynn & Chloe Mc Elhinney made things difficult for the Lakers to find scores and with Ciara Brady keeping the Eagles scores dropping in, their hopes of a result were kept alive.
The final quarter didn’t disappoint either as the Eagles put it up to Muckno and battled on every inch of the court. The belief that anything is possible and their will to achieve drives the girls and even though they have the wherewithal to succeed, on this occasion tired limbs and the occasional lapse left the Lakers no ‘7’ Sorkauskaite open for two late 3’s to deny an upset. Ciara Brady who finished with 18 pts, Chiara Salomone getting on the scoreboard and another 3 from Caitlin Brady saw a 14 point quarter. While the girls were elated with their game, the disappointment on not to having come away with a result will push them to correct the errors and look forward to their next meeting in the New Year.

Finally, Eagles Ladies hope all their support, club members and families had a Very Happy Christmas 🎅 and look forward to seeing you all in 2017 🎆

Eagles visit League Newcomers Drogheda Ladies

Week 2 of The NEAB League saw East Cavan Eagles girls visit newcomers Drogheda Ladies.
Bernard Sheridan, coach and court side reporter has put this report together for us. Many thanks Bernard and not to mention the all important photographs .
The U12 girls game was great, end to end basketball. They were very unlucky with the result, losing out by just two points 21 – 19 but they all played great.
The U14 girls dominated their game 49 – 10 but once again player numbers have let them down. Only six for this game but they were fantastic with some great pass and go moves.
The U16 girls hit the ground running after last weeks game as they ran out clear winners in a game that saw all the players score and a much better display.
On Sunday the U12 Boys were very unlucky to only lose by one points in a game that was end to end and had all on the end of their seats. While the U16 Boys lost out by eight points to a very slick Bullits side. The U18s suffered a high scoring defeat but missed chances could and would have seen a closer game. The U15s put in a spirited performance against strong opposition but never gave up the ghost.
Great desire by all and plenty to look forward to for the rest of the season.

Drogheda Ladies Basketball Under 14 Girls Challenge

We would like to thank Drogheda Ladies Basketball Club for bringing their Under 14 Girls team over to Virginia today to play a challenge game.

It was great for us to get to meet new people in the game and we look forward to meeting you all in again in the near future.

Big thanks goes to our referee for the game Paul Sheridan and our table officials Rory Bett, Sean McEvoy & Jake Verschoyle.

Stars of The Future came out to play

IMG_0095It was the turn of our underage (12 & 14) to entertain the assembled masses on Sunday at Virginia College and they did not let us down. These two games against Carrick Rockets proved as the perfect appetiser to a truly wonderful game of basketball between our Under 16 Girls and Dunshaughlin Rockets Under 16’s. Dunshaughlin came out on top in a real nail biter that finished East Cavan Eagles 40-41 Dunshaughlin Rockets.
Such is the strength in depth in the NEAB that both Dunshaughlin Rockets & East Cavan Eagles were able to field and Under 15’s girls challenge match as the perfect end to a perfect day.

We look forward to many such more days.

Thanks go to Bernard for the pictures.

What a weekend of Basketball Under 18 Girls National Cup

This was probably the first time a team from Cavan had taken part in the U 18 national cup and we were heading to Tralee with a team that were up for a challenge and determined to give all teams a good run for their money and prove a point.

The girls were pooled with Carrig Na Bhfear Rebels from Cork and DCU Mercy.

On Saturday morning we all headed down to the gym to have a look at our opponents

And a very tall DCU team dominated the boards against the Cork girls and ran out 68 to 35 winners.

Our first game v Carrig Na Bhfear started a bit tentative and it took a bit of time to get up to speed but with great team work all round the 70 to 49 final score line was justified and guaranteed progression to Sunday’s semi final.

A break of one game and next up DCU. The girls were not used to playing against girls which had a height difference and the DCU girls took full advantage of it and their inside play was excellent, all the girls kept battling away and if nothing else would learn from the experience and finished up losing 65 to 49.

Back to the Fells Point Hotel and a well earned shower for the girls and dinner watch the rugby highlights and roll on Sunday morning.

An early start of 10am saw the Eagles girls up against another Cork team and last years losing finalists Brunell Ladies. They had 2 wins the previous day and looked like a team on a mission to make up for last year but they hadn’t planned on meeting the Cavan girls on their own mission …….

A game where the statement that a basketball game is never won until the last quarter rang true 15 points down at half time many might have thought it a gap too far to bridge but some of these girls have been here before and it’s starting to rub of on the rest of them. Their battling qualities saw them close the gap and a 20 pts to 9 fourth quarter and 1 out of 2 from Ciara Brady from the free throw line levelled the game 74 – 74 and a last gasp shot from Brunell Couldn’t win the game and overtime beckoned.

What a come back and the girls didn’t let up in overtime 10 – 6 saw them kill of Brunell and the girls were through to the quarter finals and in the seeding final v DCU.

The seeding game was a different kettle of fish from the previous day a 16- 16 first quarter 5 down at half time and the game was anyone’s. The girls had learnt so much from the last game v DCU  and fought for every ball, tall girls or not, they kept going till the very end but couldn’t take the lead. Tired legs and bodies they gave their all and a 50 pts to 44 scoreline in favour of the Dublin girls was a very positive result.

I’ll finish as I started what a weekend of Basketball…..

Many thanks to Laura for organising the weekend and for her help all weekend.

Thank you to all who travelled Ann,Caitlin, Pauline,Iris, Mary,Orla, Francie and Bernard great support as always.

And last but not least the young ladies Ciara C,Leah,Amy,Aoife,Ailisa,Chloe,Aislinn,Ciara B and Alison who did them selves proud and their parents with great performances all round I couldn’t have asked for more… Thank you all so much.

Next up Fr Mathews Cork on the 6th of December
