Muckno Lakers at Eagles

Muckno Lakers at Eagles

There was an entertaining day of basketball yesterday in Virginia College as we welcomed Muckno Lakers from Castleblaney. Our under 10 Academy players started proceedings with challenge games between our ‘Hawks’ and ‘Falcon’ teams with forty of our boys and girls taking to the court for their first taste of full court games.

They were followed by our under 16 boys put in a good performance, but were unable to match a powerful Muckno team. Despite best efforts Muckno proved too strong with a final score of 23-65.

Our under 12 girls faced a Muckno team who were unbeaten all year. The girls were keen to reverse the five point loss they had suffered last September. The girls had a fantastic game and recorded a well deserved victory by 39-22.

The under 12 boys game was an entertaining match up between two eager and capable teams. A fantastic half court buzzer beater was one of many highlights in a competitive game which saw Muckno winning by a margin of 15-29.

The under 18 boys game didn’t fail to disappoint, with both teams showing high levels of competitiveness, skill and athleticism. The enthusiastic crowd was rewarded with a great spectacle of basketball with Eagles securing the win by 73-54.

We wish Muckno Ladies the very best of luck today as they take on Limerick (and Nadine) in the National Arena today.

East Cavan Eagles have always been focused on developing the game of basketball in our region and our Academy is the cornerstone of this. We currently have up to 80 children between the ages of 7 and 10 actively involved every Friday evening.

We as a club have seen the benefits of encouraging children of this age to get involved on the sport and we are sure that many parents have also seen the benefits.

On the 23rd of December we had a special visitor to The Academy with a gift of a tee-shirt and basketball for every member,

A great deal of organisation goes into the Academy by our club members and I am sure you would all like to join us in thanking them for their efforts.

We look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Last season, Muckno Lakers were averaging 58 points a game over Eagles but just before Christmas  the girls cut that deficit by a whopping 54 points. These are the top two Senior women’s teams in our region and it was their first meeting of the season. The previous weekend Muckno were dispatching Cork side Brunell as they defended their Intermediate Cup title and progress to the semi finals in January. But for a few hardy souls, the north east support must have presumed this would be a one sided event and stayed away, but how wrong they were.
Both sides saw changes to their rosters from last season with Eagles listed 5 under 18 players and two 1st year college goers and while Muckno were down a couple of key players they still had 12 lined out. Even though inexperience can be a challenge at this level, we mustn’t forget that all but one of these girls lined out at an U18 Cup semi final against Glanmire two years ago, no challenge is too big.
Starts and finishes are key to these games and Muckno started well but Eagles kept in touch throughout the opening quarter with Chloe Mc Elhinney hitting 8 of their 14 points and with Ciara & Caitlin Brady & Ailisia Mc Enroe stepping up, Eagles now have spome strength and depth. Eagles found themselves behind by 7 at the end of the period but they regrouped in the second quarter and out scored Muckno with points from Ciara Brady, Aislinn Grealy and a second three of the game for Caitlin Brady to only trail 35 – 31 at half time buzzer.
Eagles knew how dangerous Muckno could be in the third quarter but the girls once again stepped up to the mark and stopped Muckno’s threat to finish the period 43 – 39. During the period luck seemed to be running out as Muckno pushed out to a 9 point lead but the girls once again adapted to reel the Lakers in. Excellent defensive work by Leah Flynn & Chloe Mc Elhinney made things difficult for the Lakers to find scores and with Ciara Brady keeping the Eagles scores dropping in, their hopes of a result were kept alive.
The final quarter didn’t disappoint either as the Eagles put it up to Muckno and battled on every inch of the court. The belief that anything is possible and their will to achieve drives the girls and even though they have the wherewithal to succeed, on this occasion tired limbs and the occasional lapse left the Lakers no ‘7’ Sorkauskaite open for two late 3’s to deny an upset. Ciara Brady who finished with 18 pts, Chiara Salomone getting on the scoreboard and another 3 from Caitlin Brady saw a 14 point quarter. While the girls were elated with their game, the disappointment on not to having come away with a result will push them to correct the errors and look forward to their next meeting in the New Year.

Finally, Eagles Ladies hope all their support, club members and families had a Very Happy Christmas 🎅 and look forward to seeing you all in 2017 🎆

Eagles Senior Teams on The Double

Eagles Senior Teams on The Double

It was a busy Sunday in Virginia College.
Our junior teams hosted Tara Druids first and set the scene nicely for the main event to follow in the evening, our first double header of the season with both our senior ladies and senior men playing.
First up was our Ladies taking on the visitors from Navan Cougars.

Eagles welcomed new senior ladies side Navan Cougars to Virginia college for their second league game of the season. Like Eagles debut at senior level last season, it has been a baptism of fire for the newbie’s opening two outings.
Eagles are adding slowly to their roster and welcomed Chiara Salomone to their ranks and hope to add a few more players in the coming weeks.
After their opening win against Drogheda Ladies, Eagles were a little apprehensive going into this tie against a team coached by veteran ex Cobra’s Coach Anthony Ayres. But like Eagles against Muckno last season, senior basketball can take a season or two to come to terms with.
Even though this was a one sided affair, Eagles showed determination in their play and a great  spread of scores.
Thanks for all those who travelled to support the girls, it was much appreciated.
Up next for the Eagles girls is the much anticipated away game against Muckno Lakers on Friday 16th of December at 8pm.
Our senior men also provided excellent entertainment as they beat Drogheda Bullets.
The support in the gym was brilliant and we hope you all continue to come down and support Eagles.
Here are some pictures from the games.

The Academy is Back

The Academy is Back

Since we first started The Academy it has always been popular with children in the targeted 7-10 years age group. We have always felt that this is the ideal age for children to take their first steps into team sports, not only basketball.

As a club, last season was probably the first time we had children from our Academy step on the court to play league games at Under 12 level and I think we all saw the benefit of our Academy for both the boys and girls.

Later than we would have liked, but the Academy started back last night and wow!, what a turn out. 74 children joined in the fun and games last night in Virginia College, not a parking space was to be had at the school.

We would like to thank all that helped out with the coaching and supervision on the night and look forward to seeing you all again next week. It was great to see some of our club players (and even an ex-club player) helping out on the night.

The Academy is a very important part of the development of our club and has already brought though some very strong players and Under 12 & Under 14 Levels, we look forward to watching with interest the next crop of stars coming though.
